avast appears to be messing up all my games during play i had to disable all the shields in order to get rid of the problem or else it will give me symptoms similar to a fried video card.

I've tried Avast here and ended up having to remove it. AVG has been reliable over a long period of time. The important to remember regardless of which one is installed and run on your system is getting familiar with a lengthy list of other programs since you won't be able to find one that will be 100% effective 100% of the time. None in the list there represents a complete safeguard. AVG is simply preferred here due to it specifying where things are located even if it is unable to remove or supress them.

One other thing to note is that antivirus programs usually have to be disabled when running various pc games to avoid problems.

Avast! coupled with Prevx1 is definitely your best bet, but if you are certain you need to go another route, something I am not convinced of, then NOD32 is your next best bet, followed by AVG.

AVG has always held up it's end here. Another one that comes with some good references is Antivir. You can try out the latest free version at http://www.majorgeeks.com/download955.html I'll still be running AVG however. On one system I let one I-Worm go to see how well it dud. It pointed out the exact locations for each file effected. It was a piece of cake to clean that off afterwards.

The only one in that list that isn't total crap is AVG, but I would still vote for Avast. I use AntiVir, and it is the most annoying thing i have ever seen. Constant popups.

Well I interpreted the question as the best anti-virus, not which one I use or which is the best overall.

IMO Norton protects the best, however, I don't use it unless it is on a 'work' computer.
