Default What is windows activation?

I have just installed an update for Nero and suddenly when I restart computer it says computer has recovered from a serious error with the error report dialogue box! There was no error that I'm aware of. When I restarted there was a box saying hardware has changed significantly since windows was installed and that I need activation within 3 days!

I use WinXP which was purchased with the computer a few years ago and as far as I know it is up to date.

Anyone know what this activation is? Do I need it?

Activation is just Microsoft's way of making sure that you legally own your copy of Windows. Yes you need it, unless you want your computer to stop working very soon.

Don't bother posting if that's all you have to say.

What I don't understand is why I've suddenly received this. I've been using this computer and XP for a number of years. I did whatever was required at the time to get it up and running. This is crazy!

This is extremely frustrating! I have recently validated my version of XP when downloading other apps from the Microsoft website. I have enquired and my family - parents and sister have all had the same issue. Now that I try to validate, following Microsoft instructions, it won't work!

What is frustrating is that this validation is for their benefit, not mine. Why should it be my problem if their validation system isn't working?!

The joys of Windows eh?

Out of interest did they tell you why you had suddenly started having problems?
