I have a winxp sp2 pc that lately has consistently booted itself up a few hours after having been hibernated.
Any ideas why? In the list of scheduled tasks, there is nothing scheduled to cause it to boot up (I didn't even think auto-booting from hibernation was possible). Norton internet security 2006 finds no viruses, trojans etc...

Doublecheck your LAN or modem settings in Device Manager and your BIOS to see if you have Wake-on LAN or modem activity setting activated.

I looked in the BIOS and found no option like the one you mentioned. I looked in device manager and under "modem" as well as under "network adapters" I see the option checked to "allow this device to bring the computer out of STAND-BY". Would unchecking that work although my problem is waking up from hibernation and not stand-by? This is a single computer, no home network, just a dsl modem connected via ethernet. So I assume the "modem" settings in the device manager don't play a role here. I'll try changing the ethernet adapter settings to see if that does the trick. If you have any other input, I'd be glad to hear it.

This is all I can think of off the top of my head except for one other thing: check within your BIOS for an alarm setting. Mine has one that if/when set, will fire up the PC at any time I choose, whether it's off, on standby, or hibernating.Tom

Thanks, Tom. It seems to have worked by changing the network adapter settings in device manager to not allow that device to bring the computer out of standby. I guess in that sense, standby as well as hibernation are implied. Last night was the first time the computer didn't boot up by itself over night.

Very cool! With luck it will keep on sleeping
A network's a network, be it dialup modem, or broadband. Tom
