Default Hardware not recognized

I have a SonyDesktop pent 4 120 gig. The usb harddrive I use for storage is not recognized, I tried all the microsoft info & sony info but to no help. I saw somewhere when I was messing with it, It said it was in shut down mode & couldn't be restarted. I have used this drive on other computers & it works fine. How can the safely remove hardware Item be shutdown & restarted to use this device?
Thanks
Dave

Shutdown mode? I'm not familar with that... Just to double check, do all your other USB devices work fine on your computer? If so, have you tried using different ports? I even mean ones beside each other. If still nothing, do you get anything on the taskbar at all(warnings, safely remove hardware, etc) or anything new on Device Manager? And warnings or errors there? Finally, you may want to check computer management(Rightclick my computer, MANAGE, disk management) and see if the drive shows up there. If so, see if you can right-click it and assign a drive letter.

When you click to safely remove hardware, so it can be removed it said it did not shut down. I tried all the ports, everything it said in the troubleshooter about restalling the drivers etc. It says no drivers are required or are not installed. XP Home should recognize it . I been messing with this since Aug 10
Microsoft Support is a joke.

I have some error that said it wasn't shut down properly, but its been at least a month & it still won't work. If someone can tell me how to get in and shut it down properly it might fix it. I guess I will have to try other forums, this forum doesn't seem to have the expertise that I need .
Thanks to those who have responded.

Dogman1313,
First off man dont give up so easily and dont be a ass with your answers. Take a screenshot of your computer when you plug the device in and as well go into the system and go to device manager and see if its there and since this is a harddrive you can even go into disk management and see if it shows up there and just isnt being assignend a letter value so its not showing up. Try the screen shot thing man we might be able to help you more if we can see your error

The safely remove hardware error only came up once, When you plug in the hard drive it says usb device not recognized, click here for troubleshooting. I do that, it takes me to windows troubleshooting, I go to device manager, click on usb controllers ,it says unknown device, if you left click it says it could not find a better match for the hardware we have. If you right click on it, click on properties it says no drivers are installed.I click on driver details it says no drivers are required or have been installed for this device, I click on update driver, it say it couldn't find a better match. This drive worked fine untill I had to reload windows. All the usb ports work fine, the hard drive works on other computers. Thanks codeman for the reply .

Dogman,

A few things to try if you reformatted your computer and its not recognizing it uninstall the device under the device manager click on remove and it will remove it but before plugging it back in check the manufacturer's site for drivers that may be needed and install all drivers manually before plugging it back in and then try to plug it back in and see what happens wtih it..
