Default Power Surging Compaq

I have my friends compaq presario. its acting really oddly. she was on it and it shut down. i thought maybe her power supply quit, so i gave her one of my old ones. now the computer powers up for about 10 seconds, shuts down, and automatically tries again and again. any thoughts? i have no clue.

Just let the thing fry and tell her to buy something better.....

No....lol I don't know, how far does it load up? If it gets to the point where it's supposed to start windows, it could be a problem with a Windows update as my Compaq and some other guy's HP went into a continous reboot loop after installing certain updates.....

no it actually doesnt do anything. i could make a vid. its funny. all you hear is fans winding up, the HDD trying, and then it shuts off. nothing crosses the monitor...ever. but the stupid thing refuses to give up. it keeps trying unless i kill the power supply switch. but trust me, if it were my call, i would have set it on fire by now. but i think she needs a new mother board to be honest

I don't think I can help you any further then.... Your problem is differnt than I thought it was. The rig in my sig actually used to be a Compaq so I've been through a lot of there problems so...... All I can tell ya is double check all the connections make sure it's not the PSU (ex. adequete PSU, although stock Compaqs don't need that much power....) the only time I had something remotely similar is when my CPU wasn't seated properly, but I don't think that's your problem.......

My mobo just fried recently and all I did was replace it..... Ended up being one of the best things I did to the existing machine..... You can either tell to get a new mobo for say, hmmmm.... $80, or tell to get a new non-prefab computer.....

Actually, depending on how and if the mobo is fried, you wouldn't get any reaction when you turn it on..... So may not be just yet the mobo....
