Core 2 Duo

Well, as the name says, would it be worth the upgrade from my current processor, amd athlon 64 3500+ to a core2duo (different mobo, i wasn't thinking of forcing it in) as the other day the advert for one was on TV, so i randomly said could i have one of them for christmas, and to my surprise she said yes

although is it seriously worth it? performance looks good, although what about the pentium D processors, they seem cheaper, are dual core and have higher clock speeds, what do you think? I was looking at the lower end ones - E6400, for £150. Also i don't want to overclock anything, and my current PC isn't at all, so what do you think?

the E6400 would perform about the same as my 4800+ X2 i think

so yea,.. big difference

yes, it's worth it... the Pentium D's don't compare to them... check it out for youself here...

as for clock speeds, they are more and more becoming irrelevant to CPU comparisons...

you will see a nice upgrade in speed if you go for the E6400 you are looking at...

thanks for the quick replys, form what you're saying i'll hopefully be getting it, i've just checked and it's compatible with the Asus motherboard that i've got, in my other PC (always a plus, no need for new motherboard). Another thing is, what amount of ram would you reccomend, there is currently a 512 mb stick in there, and i was thinking an extra gig. Thanks again for the quick replies, lee

Edit: how about vista performance? i'm guessing it would be pretty good as my current seleron runs it pretty well!

i would suggest anything north of 1GB would be fine... if any hardcore gaming will be done, you may want to look into 2GB of RAM...

and you may want to look into a dedicated video card for vista, if you don't have one already...

the Core 2 Duo E6400 beats the AMD X2 5000 by alot.

So lots of performance from the E6400 and it's cheap.

looks good to me... although i ain't no expert with graphics cards

... it's a lot better than what i got...

well, it all depends on what you do.
if you like the newest best games, or you do a lot of video editing, then yes its worth it.
if you just play the occassional CSS or UT2004... then no its not.
