Default keyboard/BIOS problem

Hey guys. I have a crappy old Gateway that i use as a spare computer. I tried to reinstall windows xp but at the black and white screen that gives me options to start or install windows, my keyboard wont work! I thought i might have to go into BIOS because it isnt recognizing my usb keyboard. This computer is usb only. Well, I can't get into the bios because i have to hit F1 at the gateway logo and my keyboard won't work. Can anyone tell me what to do or how to get into BIOS??? And I already tried resetting the cmos by takeing out the battery and moving the jumper. The motherbord is a Microstar MS-6312. Thanks!!

With a USB only system your BIOS should have USB device support (for keyboards, mice and whatnot). Try switching to a different USB port.

Have you tried a different USB keyboard? If that doesn't work you'll probably need a new motherboard. Unless the Gateway is still under warranty then you might be able to get them to repair it for free.

Can you borrow a standard PS/2 keyboard to get into your BIOS to enable USB support? You could even buy one say at a store, try it, and then return it, saying you "changed your mind".

use the ps2 keyboard instead of usb and it should be fine...it happened on my old computer too (not gateway..), and i used ps2 keyboard then ok...the thing is i still dont know why the usb keyboard wont work

and what do you mean "usb only" it should as least have one or two ps2 port at the back right?

No, you can get systems with no PS/2 ports.
