Default DVD burning and playing (+) or (-) issue?

Basically, every year I produce a home dvd of all my photos and videos etc and incorporate some of my mates pics etc too. This has been going on since 2001 now, so have had a few of them. Trouble is, as technology has got better, and so have my skills I am now using up to 6gb of dual layer dvd's!!

The dual layer Dvd's I use are DVD + R DL's. These play fine in my pc's dvd player, but I can't get them to play on any of my, or my friends home dvd players.

Is there likely to be confliction of compatibility with the + disc? as before I used dual layer discs, all my videos were produced on '-' single layer discs, which worked fine.

Or is it likely to be something else? :S

My guess would be the DVD players they're not working on. If you say the discs play fine on your computer then you know the information has been written to the disc.

Are their DVD palyers newer? Because -R discs are more universally compatable for the most part, that's not to saying I haven't seen older, cheaper players play +R and not -R

My dvd players wont play the + dl discs. The pc does, as the drive is a Sony unit whihc plays '+' or '-' discs.

Basically I've never seen '-' dual layer discs, so had to buy the '+' discs.... which I've never used before in any format.

I'm not sure why they play on the pc and not the dvd players. The only thing that has been suggested to me before would be because the dvd in my pc is Sony, which I was told like to be different and designed the '+' discs, everyone else used '-' discs, which play fine in all my non sony dvd players, and also my friends. But now, these + discs only work on my sony dvd pc drive.

Hard to explain properly!!

Brand has nothing to do with it. I've never sceen DL-R disks either, but like I said before -R disks are better compatable with devices not specified to support a specific type. New DVD players generally specify which they'll support.

I've never used DL disks as I've never needed them, but I hear their compatability is pretty sparce. You'd be MUCH better off if you could use plain R's, and probably -R's as they seem to be slightly more compatable(though I've seen a few players that only play +R's)

Really weird. I would suggest to try another brand, see if that works. And, does your mate's DVd players support DL?

If I get a job within a month, the system will have a Celeron 4x series, so I can add an E6850 and an 8600GTS.
The Celeron CPU will then have a new system built with ECS. Junk, but still working.

of course they support DL, most DVDs bought from the store are DL discs.

 I see what you mean jjsevdt, I mis-understood first time round.

I have a cheap dvd player that has played everything in the past, mpeg, wmv, wma, jpeg etc.... and being a few years old it is dual layer.

I'll just have to find a dvd player that'll play these discs as I bought a job lot for a good price, but not good enough to try different discs!

Cheers though guys.

just wondering why are there +r and -r's in the first place? for the majority i hear -r's are better becuase its more compatible with other players but is that all that their is to it? is there a sticky with the pro's and cons of + and -'s? arg what tiny brain i have, its giving me headaches!
