reinstall windows

ok after that thread about cleaning registry and crap, i wondred if i should still reinstall windows...

when i first got my computer it was very fast, and after a 512 mb upgrade, new hsf, newe mobo with actual bus suppourt needed (800 fro 533), overlock, and from goign to a 9200 SE (64 bit) to a 850 pro..

my bootup time is rank...

well when i log in and hit enter after my pw, it does the windows xp chime thing b4 it even shows my desktop.. then shows it. it used to show my desktop immediately then play the chime...

havnt reinstalled in 3 years now.. what should i back up?

ive backed up my norton cd key, pics, misc .exe things, and a list of things not to forget to install

anything else? (im 15 theres not much imprtant stuff)

Norton will have a big tendency to slow things down as well as any large number of startups. When was the last time you defragged the hard drive? Nothing runs faster then a fresh installation of Windows. With XP that seems to be best on a fresh partition as well. One way to speed up loading time is to add "/noguiboot" in the boot.ini file. You can also reduce the timeout.

Don't mind the gaps seen in "Window s" and "Micro soft" when you look at the typical boot.ini file posted there. Unfortunately that's the way that comes out here. But the "/nobootgui" loads Windows without the splash screen where the blue tab scrolls back and forth. That can save a few seconds of load time. If you are not dual booting Windows the default "timeout=30" there is reduced to "timeout=5" 5=5 seconds rather then 30.

So now that you have repartitioned and reformatted along with installing a fresh copy of Windows how is it running now? It should be noticably faster for a period of time until you start loading a number of programs again.

not worth the driver/program reinstall to be honest, but I can tell there is a performance increase. Removing the boot splash screen helps too, but since i've reinstalled windows its been stubborn about letting me disable the default windows messenger, and keeps re-adding itself to the boot list once its been removed... any idea why?

goto the option screen on the messenger and uncheck the load at start up option.

I don't even use any messenger. It frees up resources for other things. The msconfig utility under the service tab would be another way. But you would first have to unhide all Microsoft services there. If you simply disable some other item.. ?

You'll get the idea there fast enough. Of course you could always use a "Windows Messenger Remover 1.0" found at http://www.freedownloadmanager.org/d...mover_26755_p/
