New Wireless Router Brand Suggestion

I currently owned two wireless routers and after 2 years or so they both at different times stopped working. One is a D-Link and Belkin Pre-N 802.11b/g.

The Pre-N router wireless signal strength will go up and down up and down, sometimes disconnecting. Strangely my wired connection to it would also disconnect, but would work again after I pull the adapter and plug it in again, later it would the same thing again.

Belkin just sent me a update file, which didn't make a difference.

I don't know much about wireless routers, are they suppose to break later on?

What brand is leading for wireless routers? If anyone knows as a fact and why.

I've got a couple linksys routers. I've had them for a couple years and they are still working fine. They were silly easy to set up out of the box and work well enough for my home network. Their 'built in' firewall is rather limited but its reasonably effective.

The reason Linksys is the best is because it's made by Cisco Systems, which a leading developer in networking.

D-Link was crap for me, replaced all of mine with Linksys, it works great now.

DLink usally makes good routers and such, but bad NIC's. Linksys usally has the best routers.

Dad's got a Motorola router now, and it's ok... However, it did give us loads of problems when we first got it

With a basic wireless router which is placed on the first storey, what signal strength should I expect from my laptop downstairs?

I use Netgear, and it has worked great for what I do.

i've found that belkin routers are easy to configure and seem to work ok

Not exactly true. Cisco bought out Linksys a few years back to be their consumer level networking hardware. They wanted to tap into the consumer market and instead of making cisco consumer stuff, they just bought linksys.

Cisco did not do much but slap their name on it. They still want you to buy their really expensive routers for commercial use.

Buffalo is a good brand that is not listed. If you are going to buy a new router look to see how much RAM is in the router. The newest line of Linksys routers have less ram, which is why a lot of people are getting buffalo ones instead.

I have a WRT54GL, and loaded third party firmware on it www.dd-wrt.com and I love it.
