The laptop has the Japanese edition of Windows installed. If you just bought the laptop return it for one with the English version of Windows installed. Otherwise you have to purchase an English version full installation disk to reinstall Windows and void warrantees on it.

You would have to contact MS support on that one. By default any automatic upgrade would go by the current version installed as part of the id verfication process for that copy of Windows. You won't want Vista installed in Japanese. You best option now is to buy an oem of XP at the low prices being seen now at least until Vista is out. Most are waiting for all of the bugs in Vista to be fixed before upgrading from XP. Plus Vista Ultimate will be $399-! An oem on XP with SP2 is... under $85.
