Default sound problem

ok
my pc seems to have all sorts of problems.
often it does not start/load/boot in 1st attempt.
And sometimes shows error message
that it has recovered from a serious hardware problem when i start.
if your pc did not start in first attempt then it might be suffering from hardware problems.

And today i find that something horrible has happened to the sound.
when i play my favourite music it does produce a sound but that is horrible in nature and is nowhere near the actual quality.

what can i do?
should i format my computer?
help please

It sounds like a driver problem of some type. But you haven't specified whether this is being seen with onboard sound, a pci type card, or even a usb model. If something corrupted the drivers or the chip is failing that can casue quite a few problems to come up.

Well, dosen't look like sound is the biggest issue, try running a system repair at first...i'm assuming you have win xp..

What it sounds like is some piece of a software still active or something has corrupted or knocked out some of the drivers for the board. The system file checker would be a tool for repair of crosslinks to any of the essentials by verifying their condition. That would require the XP installation disk to be onhand and in the cd drive for repair or replacement there. Typing "sfc /scannow" at the Run prompt will start that process. But even after running the system tool there a fresh set of drivers will still need to be installed to see those made active.
