Video clip sound

I seem to have an interesting problem, which i cannot fathom.
I am using the on-board sound (WDM crystal codec) and all is well, works ok with wav. MP3. and is ok through audio editing sofware such as audacity, However when it comes to video, there is no sound, whether it be through window media player, or power DVD, or ive tried a couple of other media players.

I have checked the volume control, and the settings in the multimedia section under control panel,
Im running 98SE on this machine, any ideas, its probably something really simple that im just missing!

well, there's lots of types of 'video'

you probably don't have the correct codecs installed

the audio could be in any format
