Computer turning off problem

Hi guys new here. My computer is from 2001 with a processor upgrade during that time span. Now my computer after its been on for a few hours starts rattling and instantly just shuts off. after it shuts off, it makes a metallic smell which is very strong. After a while of being off it would turn on, but it would not turn on right after it turned off. But when it turns back on and is on for a long time again it shuts off in t he same way.

Sounds like a fan going out or harddrive and mabe a heat problem with the smell, need to find out where the sound is coming from

strange thing about my computer which i failed to mention was that after it shuts off, it doesnt completely shut off, i dont know how to explain it. it turns off, but the fan still runs, its extremely akward if you ask me. and I have to manually turn it off with the switch on the back.

The screen just goes out but the computer is still going, starting to sound like your video card or if you have onboard video

no, its just not the screen going off. the computer actually turns off. the green light on my case is constantly green when its working good. when it shuts off the green light blinks very slowly and the fan is still going at a slow rate but its obvious to tell the computer has shut off. i dont get whats going on here.

What type of computer is it, custom build, or commercial computer, like dell, hp, etc.?
