Default Dual Core or Core 2 duo?

Hi, please help a new stupid person in distress!!
Are dual Core processors the came as Intel Core Duo? Is one better than the other? I'd just got my head around the fact that I should buy a dual core PC when this weekend I discovered these intel core 2 duos and now I am so confused!
Also what happens come Jan 30th when Vista comes out. Does that automatically mean any PC I buy from that date will definately have that on it?
Thanks in advance!

Dual core is a type of processor. There is a Pentium D, AMD X2 series, and Core 2 Duo; naming a few. Core 2 Duo is by far the best option if you can afford it. It out performs any processor.

If you really have a lot of $$ you can go for the quad core Core 2 Duo.

If you are buying a pre-built from Dell or Hp or such, then after Jan. 30th there should be an option allowing you to get Vista.
