Buying new mobo, now I need help with CPU

So I'm buying a ASUS P5B-deluxe NIB for $150 today, I need to find out what core 2 duo to go with? I dont want to spend to much on the cpu as I have to get some new ram (DDR2) for it also.
I have a AMD X2 4200+ currently and I would like the new CPU to be faster then my old one. Would the E6300 be a noticable difference or should I goto a E6400??
I do gaming and photoshop and some CAD work.

The Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 would be about the same as your old X2 4200+. However, the Core 2 series overclocks really well. Going from a stock speed of 1.83Ghz to 2.6+Ghz is a breeze. That would put you above the performance of an FX-62 or so. If you want to go further, most have reached 3.0Ghz, some as far as 3.5Ghz.

yea im not a big overclocker myself, I dont know if I would feel comfortable doing that ether? I dont want to blow anything up LOL!
So lets base it on stock speeds, I would need a E6400 then?

The E6400 would be a better performer then the X2 4200+

Overclocking really isn't that hard, especially with the Core 2 series. As long as you don't raise the voltage, you can't do anything that will harm your processor, unless you don't follow common sense.

netiher the E6300 nor the E6400 would give you a really big improvement over the 4200+ tbh.. at least gor me, it would not get close enough to justify the expenses.

well... the money you spend on a new pc,.. you could just get a way better cooler for the 4200+ and go overclock that one.. ^^ the 4200+ will overclock pretty well too

Well the mobo is $225 at newegg so $150 is a steal I shouldnt pass-up really.

Just because something is a good deal doesn't mean that you have to get it

Overall, if you could stretch an E6600, great. Otherwise, the E6300 and the E6400 are great cpus
