Default Problems connecting to the internet

I used my laptop (win XP) at the house by directly connecting the ethernet cable from my cable modem to the computer. Internet works fine. I go to my friends house and connect his ethernet cable from his cable modem and i get the message saying that I am connected at 100mbs. I try to go on the internet and it says no internet connection is detected. He plugs his computer in and it works fine. I checked just about all the settings on each that I can think of and they all match.

Is there a setting or something that I am missing that can get me to connect at his house. His lap top connects fine when he is at my house.

Did you configure you LAN to have a set ip address and dns? If so, you might have to set it to automatic. If it was from a router, than make sure his router is set to allow automatic DHCP also.

Thanks for the reply, shortly arter i posted this i figured it out. This is how I did it in case someone else has the same problem

1st- I went to start, run, and typed "cmd" then i put in "ipconfig/renew"

2nd- I went to the network connections and right clicked on the local area connection and went to properties. then under properties i went to internet protocol (TCP/IP) and highlighted that and clicked properties. Under the general tap i went at the bottom and clicked advanced. Then I went to the WINS tab and at the bottom under NetBIOS settings i clicked Enable NetBios over TCP/IP. then i okayed everything and tried the internet and everything worked fine.

I am not sure which one actually fixed it because I tried both of them before I tried the internet. But it is working now both at my house and my friends. Hopefully this information will help anyone who encounters the same problem I did.

Thanks

You don't really need to enable Netbios, the first step should've done it. It seemed like there might of been an ip address issue where it was being assigned an ip someone else was using. The renew gave it a new ip.

Enabling the Netbios might leave your buddie or you more vulnerable to something happening. As for the automatic DHCP, it should've been set already since you were along and using it without manually configuring the ip addresses and such so you don't need to worry about that.
