Default CTD on save or autosave - Need help!

Please help me - I'm going crazy here!!!

Recently I purchased Medieval 2: Total War and I'm finding that the game is often crashing to desktop about 20% of the time that a save is made. It either happens when I press ctrl+S (to quicksave) or when I click to finish my go (autosave) or when I've just finished a battle (autosave). It even happens if I save the game from the game menu.

The thing that's really annoying me is that THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT USED TO HAPPEN ALL THE TIME WITH ROME: TOTAL WAR!!!

For those who don't know, Rome: Total War is the predecessor to Medieval 2: Total War and it uses the same graphics engine.

Does anyone know what is causing this and what I can do about it?

FYI I have updated my graphics and sound drivers and I'm running the latest version of directX.

This sounds more like an issue with the game itself. Have you searched for game updates?

The game has only just been released and there are no updates.

Like I said, I had exactly the same problem with its predecessor, even when it was fully updated.

Well it is very odd. So the game runs fine other then the crashes during saving?

Try turning off as many things as you can (background services etc.) and run the game. If you have Norton or other virus scanner, disable it. It really sounds like a game engine issue though.

Yes, the game is fine until it tries to save... Which is REALLY annoying because I can't save the game to protect against the crashes...

I've tried shutting down background tasks and it does run alot better. It still crashes but less frequently. Still, I'd like to get to the bottom of this problem.
