I'm having the hardest time finding mobo's with 2 sockets. I searched on this site in the mobo forum for 'dual core', 'dual processor', 'dual socket', 'dual chipset' and I'm not finding anything. I'm also on ASUS's website and can't even find anything, either there is no such thing or I'm having a bad monday... I see a lot of 'Quad-core' and 'Core2 ready' but nothing about multiple sockets. (I'm only referencing intel because I don't have any experience with AMD) Can somebody please tell me what I am missing?!
If you want to know what I'm ultimately after, I'm looking into getting a dual core mobo w/ core2duo chips in each socket (or AMD equivelent if appropriate). I work in CAD and with 3-d modeling and rendering all day. Thanks.

Core 2 Duo is a dual core CPU so for 1 socket you effectively get 2 CPUs. If you want 2 dual cores from Intel you'll have to look at workstation boards that take Xeons.

I see those now at the ASUS site, only under Server mobo's, not under Workstation. So they do not make dual core mobo's for CoreDuo chips yet... does anyone know if they're planning to? Or essentially that's why they came out with the Quad's. What is the AMD equivalent of a dual core xeon?

Dual core is one CPU, two physical cores, or "processors" in one socket Dual processors is two CPUs, at least one physical core per CPU, in two sockets. There are many dual core Core 2 Duo motherboards out.

Sorry, I should not have said 'dual core mobo's for core duo chips', what I meant was "dual processor mobo's for core2duo's". Seems like dual processor mobo's are not highly marketed right now which I can understand since dual core chips are so 'hot'. What are other opinions out there regarding dual processor boards?

Dual processor motherboards:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...ubCategory=302 You will need an Intel Woodcrest processor for these. (Same architecture as Core 2 Duo, but the Server version)

tyan makes alot of boards that will take 2, even 4 cpu's. not sure what they support though.

I think you guys are misleading him. I don't think he really wants dual processors with a dual socket motherboard. I think he was just trying to find motherboards for a core 2 duo, and thought he needed two sockets.
If that is the case, you DO NOT NEED that type of motherboard just for a core 2 duo. And the reason why I'm assuming you don't need a workstation motherboard is because you're only doing auto cad. |
