Default My LCD is 1080p, but what about a GPU?

Can someone clear this up for me. If my LCD tv is rated up to 1080p high definition, do I know if a video card sends out that kind of signal? I understand I would have to use a DVI to HDMI converter, but does that mean it is in 1080p? I've been looking at all the new GPU's and none of them mention what kind of HD they run. Can anyone educate me here? Thanks a lot.
