Default Connecting between 2 computers

Ok.. We have a computer here at home and then we have one at the firestation here in our city. My dad is the assist. chief and he is incharge of reporting the reports. He uses Firehouse Software. He wants to somehow connect between these two computers like a network so when he enters his reports here at home, They can be transferred to the fire station without going down there. I have tried using the Remote Desktop Connection on our computer here and the fire station. I obtained the IP address on this computer and then at the fire station. When i enter the fire stations IP address into the Remote connection thing here at home, It says it cannot connect. What can I do? Thanks!

I dunno...there's probably a free way but my dad's boss got GoToMyPC...it works pretty well, but it costs a couple pennies.
