The Intel Core 2 Duo is the best processor for pretty much any budget, but if you want the best of the best, the Core 2 Extreme Quad is the best.

Intel right now rules the market... Core 2 Duo is the best bang for the buck that i know of...

if I were to list it it would go amd quad, intel quad (extreme), intel core2duo, amd whatever the x2 line.
