Default Anybody up for a challenge. Compaq shutting down by itself

A friend using her sisters computer has written me about her compaq which shuts down after she starts it. Was working fine last week. I'm afraid she wasn't at home and didn't know the model or details. All she knew was it is a compaq running windows 2000.
When she powers up, the computer immediately shuts itself off again. I know it's not much to go on. She's kinda ditzy but a nice lady. Any generic suggestions you could recommend untill I can get more info from her?

Told you it was a challenge.

James

Ill probably agree with the PSU on that one but it could be a fault with the cpu fan. Any decent motherboard will turn the pc off if the cpu fan is not working so that it doesnt burn to bits! Just take the side of the case off to see if the cpu fan is spinning and that it is connected properly. If it is then PSU is the answer.
