Default Computer is slow and nothing seems to be working

I have a pre-built computer. Specs can be found here http://reviews.digitaltrends.com/rev...pecs13159.html.

My computer is really slow. When I got this computer I played Guild Wars well, no lags and no other problems. Now, it's really laggy. Plus, it takes a while to load Firefox, AIM, and etc. It's slow when I open programs, but when I start using it, it's just normal speed.

I have used AVG virus/spyware, avast, spybot, and adaware. I got rid of everything that it found. Then I tried to defragment the HD by going to accessories and etc. It does not work for some odd reason. Then I downloaded unltimatedefrag, that didn't work either. It always get stuck on one file or whatever it is.

I was told to clean my hard drive and etc. That does not work. I'm thinking of getting a new hard drive to replace it, but before doing that does anyone have any ideas on how to improve my computer speed? The only other idea I can think of is to reformat the whole HD, which I planned to do but there's no point if it won't help.

If you do think I should get a new hard drive, will any kind work?

I appreciate any kind of help.

Boot into safe mode, and run all Anti-Virus, Anti-Spyware, etc from there, that will enable you to get rid of all spyware & virus's (general crap really!)

It is alot better doing it in safe mode because.. well.. I dont know, just is!

However, it may be time for you to reformat it, start fresh.

When was the last time it was installed?

Back up everything!!! Reformat and re-installed windows(SP2 off course), followed by downloading all critical security updates from mircosoft! If that don't solve your problem, then try a new hard drive!
