Default did i break my soundcard?

Well yeah this is messed i just bought a stereo headset and plugged it into my x-fi amd worked fine. Then like an hour later all but maybe 5% of the sound worked, u could just barely hear things, i plugged my speakers into and same thing, just a fraction of the sound. About 5 minutes later it came back then it happened again for bout half an hour and came back on and now its fine, anyone have a clue what gives, its plugged in fine but goes away ALMOST,and randomly, making my head almost explode
