Default Wireless Networking

Hi

I recently bought a NETGEAR DG834GT 108Mbps Wireless Modem/Router and the set up went fine and both my laptop and desktop machines can connect to it - However it does seem to take a while for my laptop to connect.

The network shows up on the wireless network list but 9 times out of 10 Windows will not be able to connect to it then between 5-10 minutes it will get connected, and the signal strength is usually excellent.

I'm very new to this networking stuff and to save some money I'm using the WLAN card that came with my Dell Laptop which is only 54Mbps could this be the problem?

Thanks for any help you can give.

S.

It is ok to use the Wireless G card but your speeds will be capped at 54Mbps not the 108 like the router. Do you have the nic and the router branded? (both the same manuf?) What kind of wireless config do you have on the network? Just wep, or do you have mac address filtering also?

The router is NETGEAR and the nic (network card?) is a dell one. My desktop, which doesnt have a problem connecting uses the USB wireless adapter that came with the router.

With regard to the config, I've got MAC address filtering on but like I said the laptop does connect so it cant be that can it?

Thanks!

It can be that. If you dont have the correct address it will let it connect but give it limited or no connectivity... Try disabling the mac address filtering see if you can get it to work. Once it is working go back an re enable it but try a new mac address.

Well unfortunately that didnt work. It still takes a while to connect and often the connection hangs for a while but the signal strength is excellent.

I have a feeling it might be the Dell wireless card not being very good though.

Any other ideas?

It's trying to grab an IP addy. It shouldn't take that long, but then again you never know I guess.

Turbograb Lite? lol. I dunno. I noticed mine takes a couple of minutes too. 10 minutes would be far too long though.
