as for the power supply.. (yes, I'm doing it again ) I can only reccomend the Corsair PSU's. I think the HX520W would be more than enough for this pc. ( these PSU's actually use industrial grade components, wich makes them really durable,.. not to mention they have a 5year manufacturer warranty )

the X-Fi soundcards are good,.. but look what sort of audio output's does the pc need? ( I can immagine you would like Coaxial digital out and optical output.
I assumed that some gaming would be involved. Also, why a e6400 when there's enough money?
I more thing that I find a little strange, no offense, but why would you recommend 2TB for music when you also say to get a worse processor and worse graphics card?
Doesn't the X-Fi Elite come with an external IO box? Couldn't you have the coaxial and optical outs?

why spend more money than needed? just because the budget is there, it doesnt mean that it all has to be spend.
but yea, he could go for a E6600.. but if its only for music (and that is what i get from it so far) its a big overkill already.

as for the soundcard.. I said the X-fi is good, yea... but would you really want an external box for the different outputs?

also.. 2Tb is easely handled by the E6400.. with 2Gb of RAM... and the grafic's card.. well, that one completely has nothing to with it

like its said... Sound pc, not games nothing else is mentioned,.. just dound.. and that mainly contains, a load of storage, fast acces times and good sound quality

I would suggest getting at least 1TB since you want ultimate sound production, you will want to encode all sound into lossless formats or 320Kbps mp3 and those can get a bit large.

Take that money, and build him a near silent rig, so when he wants to enjoy his music, he won't have to listen to those fans

you must understand that you gave us a very specific feild to work in. you said sound, and it does not take a huge proc and video card to run movies and music. those are hdd intensive things, not huge on proc power or ram, or especially video cards.

Sometimes scientists make things alot harder than they need to. All they've gotta do is put a big spring on the ground where they think it's gonna land, or send a mission to the moon to erect a sign that says "Welcome to Earth".
