Default flash drive displayes much lower memory than the actual memory

hello to all,
recently i have bought a new pen drive of 2 GB capasity. i just copied 150 MB of data that i have downloaded. soon after it started displaying 500 MB free memory. before that it was fine. i dont know what happened. somebody told, this may be a virus infection. i searched net for this. but all i got was only how to recover the data not the hard disk. can any one help me in this regard.
( i have formated the flash drive, still no use.)
help me!!!
