Default Problem from the beginning

Hi everyone,

Here's the problem. I just recently bought a high end system:

Asus P5W DH Deluxe mg
2x1024 OCZ value ram
XFX 8800gts 640meg vid card
Thermaltake TR2500 500 watt ps
Thermaltake 'matrix' case
160gig sata2 hd
(I can list anything else, if needed)

I have flashed the bios to the lastest version (1602). Unfortunately, I've had to use Win98 to initially install, but am going to overwrite (update) with win xp pro shortly. I've gotten everything started up but I get this message before going into windows:

"Insufficient memory to initialize Windows, quit one or more memory resident programs or remove unnecessary utilities from your CONFIG.SYS or AUTOEXEC.BAT files, and restart your computer".....and then my comp automatically shuts down.

I was wondering:
1. Is it because it's Win98, which has a hard time recognizing the newer components so I'll need to switch to Win XP sooner than I anticipated, or
2. Is it because of the conflict that ASUS mb's have with OCZ ram? I've attempted to change the latency but nothing's worked to date. On boot up, the comp recognizes that there is 2gigs of ram, so I wasn't sure if this was the problem or not..

any help is greatly appreciated!

(p.s this is a double post from Operating Systems)

I would think it is because of Win98. I tried using it on my Pentium D build a few months ago and I got tons of errors, and with yours you have even newer hardware.

Do you have any other way to upgrade to XP?

Well I tried it but there's no autostart. When I used the Win98 boot disk to get things loaded (ie. windows) and tried to use the XP disk I've got, I couldn't get setup.exe to work. It said I couldn't load it from DOS.

ok so lemme see if I'm getting all this right...
1. Your WinXP CD is not bootable and you have to upgrade from a previous OS to install it...
2. Win98 is giving you errors during boot-up
ok
well if you have a legal Windows XP license-key then I'd say go and ask a friend if they have a bootable Windows XP cd so you can do a full install instead of an upgrade. I'm pretty sure thats legal...
If none of your friends have a bootable XP CD then I'd say try reinstalling Win98 once more to see if that might fix anything.
Hope this might help...

there shouldn't be a capital punishment for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?

Yes, the Win XP does not seem to be bootable. I do have my valid key, so I'll give that a try. I had a suspicion that the Win98 could be the problem since the ram does show up during the bootup process, but that since my components were newer and that there might be compatability issues. I've tried installing the Win98, which has loaded up on the C drive, but it won't properly load (ie. actually have windows come up on screen). I just get that error message.

This would be easier to explain if I were home at my comp though...

Try going into BIOS and setting the boot priority to CD drive first. That should detect it even if its not boot-able. Its just a hunch cuz I don't know much about 98 and how it works too well, but that's what I did with XP.

I'll give it a go. Maybe deleting the Win98 first..

Thanks for all the responses though. I do appreciate them.

i don't think an xp upgrade disc is bootable. is it an upgrade disc? if so, you have to install 98 first. i wonder if an upgrade key would work with a full install disc?

Windows 9x doesn't play nice with the i965 chipset. You'll have get a newer OS.
