Default Umm..umm...ahh...what was i saying?

So i have a HUGE project coming up in my english class (im in 10th grade), its gonna be on the 18th of december (like 2 weeks away), and honestly ive been dreading every moment since we've been asigned to do it. Its going to be a 6 paragraph speech (mine is an arguementative about the death penalty), which we will have to memorize and present to the entire class. I should say that i really think i do have some anxiety problems, and before during things like this ive totally embarrased myself in front of big groups. im the kind of person who forgets what they are saying, sorta stutter, shake, gulp alot, get blush red...you know..everything that could go wrong.

So its weird coming to computer forum and asking what should i do about this. Like i hear there are medicines for anxiety disorders, but i was wonering if they actually help at all (and if 2 weeks is enough to put them in full effect). Theres the other option i would rather not do, which is counceling...i dont know if that really helps all that much though. i havent realy talked to my parents about this since i really dont know what to do.

so anyways what do you guys suggest?

I'd say don't worry, everyone feels like you do at some point. Heck, the valedictorian at my brother's college stuttered and messed up on her speech in front of everyone, including families at the college. It can't be that bad... the worst thing you could do is drug yourself up with medication. Maybe you should practice in front of your parents and friends beforehand, and see how that goes.

My advice is to practice a little the night before and then, before you give the speech of whatever you're giving, just clear your mind and almost act aloof.... keep you mind off it...... Worrying just makes you stutter more....

Heh. Actually I do know of such a drug. Lorazepam and Ativan (Lorazepam sublingual) works to smooth out anxiety and panic attacks/disorders. If you find the right dose it will probably do the trick. Ativan works within a couple of minutes of taking it, Lorazepam within about 20 or so. Funny, I had a guy on the street approach me today and ask me if I knew anyone that wanted to buy any.

The thing is that you're pretty young to be taking stuff like that, and it can be addictive and why doctors are very hesitant to prescribe it.

That kind of thing sounds perfect to me. im just hoping that i could use something like that. i know that alot of times doctors give less strong drugs at first to see if it helps, but then later gives u the full loaded drugs that actually work. im just hoping if i get on something, that it will definatly work by the time of this project.

And we all appreciate it.

But the best way to get over stage fright is to keep doing public speaches and then get used to doing them. (look at me I'm one to talk! )

Lorazepam and Lorazepam SL are tranquilizers. Much the same effect as Valium. They are a quick fix. They are not to be taken regularly or they lead to the problem of addiction.

If you have anxiety attacks on a regular basis, there could be an underlying cause to it. Anxiety attacks are not only a disorder of their own, but they are also a symptom of depression. A good antidepressant like Effexor, Welbutrin or any number of them can actually not only lift your spirits but also reduce the occurence of anxiety attacks. A good psychiatrist would be able to help figure out if that was in fact a problem. Doesn't sound like it, but then again I don't know you either.
