Default Computer won't load windows

Hey guys...I recently installed avast! antivirus, and ever since then, i've been having problems with my computer. At the end of the installation, it asked me if i wanted to restart- i said no. I then went into "msconfig" and took avast off the list of startup services. A few hours later, I restarted my computer. Ever since then, the computer just hangs on the loading screen...I've left it there for hours and it just sits there. Right now I'm in safe mode...I've uninstalled avast, but it hasn't helped.

What should I do??

EDIT: oh yeah, wiping the harddrive isn't an option....

Uninstall everything, defrag, use Adaware SE. And get a hijackthis log. Best advice for now.

When I say formatting isn't an option, that implies that I want to keep the files on my computer, including programs...

Ah, I've fixed it. When I hit the restart button while Windows was booting, and I got that screen that says Windows was interrupted while booting, etc...I entered "Last known Good Configuration" and it worked.
