Hello,
I ran a Sophos scan today and it detected a hooking application: MadCodeHook. I did not intentionally install this on my computer, and for the past few days I've been getting a bunch of Windows "process failed"/"Windows encountered problem with process" error messages, which I think would be consisten with an app that intercepts and injects malicious info into processes. When I tried to cleanup the app using Sophos, I would get a flurry of "process failed" errors...a result of MadCodeHook, I suspect. Anyway, I located the file C:\WINDOWS\system32\madchook.dll and deleted and its not getting detected on Sophos (or any of the 4 security packages recommended in the ComputerForum "Basic Malware Removal" post). So I think I got rid of it, but since I was not able to do a cleanup via Sophos and since I don't know much about *.dll files, I am concerned that there may be other processes running or code on my machine from MadCodeHook...can any one help???? Thanks! |

Great; Thanks!
I have Sophos AV, LavaSoft Ad-Aware, Windows Defender and Spybot. A couple of other things: now when I run Sophos, it flags the following as potentially unwanted application: C:\System Volume Information\_restore{46DE8921-1D39-44D2-A9E9-64119261F211}\RP417\A0067970.dll I think it's just the restore file of the madchook.dll, I manually deleted...but since it is C:\System Volume Information, I can't get access to it...I also tried manually deleting from the command line, but got access denied again...anyone know how to get rid of that?? Finally, can anyone speculate on how I got it in the first place? I am careful about what sites I visit, don't open unknown email attachments...and does anyone know what a malicious hooking app does?? Thanks a lot for all the help; it is much appreciated! |

If you turn off system restore, that'll flush your restore points, then turn it back on and take a new one.
That hooking app can be a legitimate process. As to where you got it, it could be anywhere. I visited a site the other day (not on my main comp, obviously) and without even clicking on anything got over a thousand bits of crap on the machine. What you had there was pretty mild.
