DVD writer stupid question

i burned a friend of mine some file onto a 8gb disc. he cant open the files and i dont know why. is this because he doesnt have a dual layer DVDrw? could this be the case? i know its stupid but it worked on his GF's mac.

any help would be great. thanks

I've never really used a duel layer DVD, but I do hear of many compatability issues. But your friend doesn't even have a DVD-RW? I know many plain drives have problems reading burnt DVDs. My previous laptop would only read DVD-R's, no DVD+R's...

Thanks man. i wasnt sure if there had been many compatability issues but as i see there are i'll send the files over on CD. in fact i'll make him upgrade and get a DVDrw. i think that will be easy :-) thanks man!

dvd-rw's have much better compatability than dvd+r's

you pretty much skipped the whole +/- so i don't know what kind of disc you used

i've had bad experiences with the dual layers, tho

i know ps2/xbox wont read +'s or -'s (dual layer that is)

and a lot of dvd-roms will only read the 1st layer

yeah thats maybes why theres the whole compatibility issue. i might just go back to my original drive as it was not dual layer and ive only actually burnt 1 disc dual layer and it was that one. thanks guys!

yeah, dual layer r/rw's don't have very good compatability with older readers.

hopefully as time goes on more and more devices will be compatable

Not just older readers. I'm pretty sure most DVD Players don't really like them either. Again, I've never tried one. All my videos normally would fit on a CD-R...if I could use one! But I think I recall reading somewhere my DVD-Recorder(like a VCR) won't read them. I know it won't record to them.
