I found a discarded Windows 98 AST 622 and all I can get is "modem not found." I tried another modem which appeared to install OK with the same result. The computer was networked but the modem wouldn't work when I didn't enter the network either. The DOS browser Arachne and some ISP installation programs failed to detect it also. The soundcard also doesn't work. Those things hardly ever fail so I think the owner may have disabled them some way in the software although the system folder shows them and the drivers are there. Not being a techie, I'll never figure it out myself, and the thing isn't worth spending money on to me.

I would think that the motherboard got fried by a power surge and damaged those ports. However, you can look through the Hardware Profiles of the My Computer Properties window and see what's going on there...
