Think this is going to be a very difficult thread to sustain without it becoming extremely arguementative. You're deliving into religion here and sadly religious debates will always go the wrong way. Although not intended the question kinda starts to question faith which ultimately goes downhill fast.

Personally I am a man of science but I shall leave my opinions on the whole matter out of this as I don't fancy the consequences. Good luck with this one but I give it three pages before lockage

Christmas has nothing to do with the true meaning of Christ. Yes it his day of birth, but the tree, the lights, gifts, and even Santa is all marketing. I am a Christian, and will tell you what I believe. No there was no big bang, God created the heavens and earth. On the six day he created a man and a woman (Adam & Eve). But their disobedience to God led sin into the world and man kind to its doom. No one can enter heaven with sin. But God gave his son, Jesus Christ to die for us and who ever believes in him will have their sin washed away.

Patrickv if you are still confused you can get a bible and start reading Geneses and John. Those two books in the bible should help. Also find a pastor of a Chastain church and pick his brain for more information. If you seek you shall fine.

Now to anyone that was offended by this, will all I can say is that I have to tell the truth. Now that I did I will leave from the thread.

Christmas is a waste of perfectly good trees, paper and light bulbs......

I believe in the gift giving and get togethers and what-not but I doubt, when I grow up, I'm going to go through the effort of decorating and what-not as I believe it's all frivilous and materialistic.....

I also don't believe in the actual meaning of Christmas because I am agnostic and merely believe that there is a spiritual entity but not how it may be described in other beliefs and/or religions......

belief in those things does not negate the existance of God. If god created the earth he would have done so with the evidence of pre-existence, hence there was a big bang, evolution does exist, the earth has been around for millions of years... why because when god created the universe he also created time, and with time come past. So god created the past, hence all those things actually happened.
Any Christian or any other faith goer who claims to believe in God, yet says evolution does not exist is naive. God created all the universe including its history before he made it. You can sum it up in this sentence:
"God created the cow with grass in it mouth, and the calf in it's womb"

Ok. Here's the real deal on Christmas.

Santa Claus was invented by the Coca Cola company in the early 1900's. Saint Nick did exist under the same premise. Christmas has nothing to do with Christianity, never did, never will. Christianity has attempted to invade the holiday and make it their own, but it has nothing to do with them.

Commerce has also invaded the holiday. They have focused on conning people into needlessly spending a zillion dollars on shit people don't even want. It's a complete joke.

The only part of Christmas I believe in is spending time with family and friends and sharing with the less fortunate. Otherwise Christmas is a complete and total joke. All the "gimme gimme" I hear all over the place just makes me want to puke.

What makes me happy? Putting money in the Salvation Army kettles and settling down on Christmas Day with family, a simple dinner and a case of beer.
