Default question about printing via home network...

hey guys, i just bought my girl a laptop for x-mas. i've got everything set up on it except for a printer. i was hoping to find a trick way to hook it up to a printer besides switching a usb cable back and fourth between my desktop and her laptop. you'll have to excuse my lack of network knowledge, but i was wondering if there was a way to print something out on a printer that is connected to my desktop computer. i've hooked up a router so that we have an internet connection throughout the house. is there a way to send a print job to the desktop and have it print out there?
thanks for your help!

Find out your printer has an ethernet network port on it or not. if yes hook it up to switch, set ip address to that printer. Install printer driver software in both desktop and laptop.

I'm not a networking master but i know you can share the printer across the network. i did it before back in the day when my bro lived with me.

you'll have to enable sharing on the desktop PC. if you go to the printer manager (if that's what it's called), it's under printer and fax in the control panel, click on the printer you wanna share, then click on printer, then share and follow the directions. it's pretty easy to setup but it only works if the computer sharing the printer is turned on, i don't think it needs to be logged into just on and in windows. if your desktop is always on then you shouldn't have a problem with this method, if there's a better way someone please chime in.
