for some reason nowhen i press fn and a function e.g. volume up it doesnt come up with the display telling you the volume level at the moment, do you know how i can get it back? thanks

What model is your laptop?
You probably mistakenly or accidentally disabled the hotkeys programs or Fn functions from startup.

i only remember media center having that feature on screen when you do the volume thing. xp pro and home doesnt have it.

you mean those volume bars as in like a tv type or the volume nob on your taskbar?

i had the same problem. i use also Acer(xp home)
go to run> msconfig> startup> and select all the acer tools(select all the function to be more sure.) and also go to services and check if you have disabled the acer services. i resolve my problem like this
