Hey guys, well my main computer just crashed so I'm going to be building a new one. I want to wait for the Windows Vista release with DirectX10 so I can get a DirectX10 video cards, and I have a few questions which I really need some help on:
1. When Windows Vista is released, do Nvidia and ATI have Direct X10 video cards ready for release around the same time? 2. If I bought my new computer now, would upgrading to directx10 just mean getting Vista and a new video card? Or would I need a new mobo? This forum has always been very helpful and thanks to everyone and anyone for any help

1. I beilive that they will have the DX10 cards ready for relise. It wouldent make and sense not to have them ready because dont you need DX10 for aero and the effects/animations in the better packages of vista?
2.You do not need a new mobo, as long as you have a graphics card slot or PCIe slot you will be fine.

First, dx10 cards are already out. Nvidia released the 8800gtx and 8800gts, Ati will release theirs fairly soon...Second, yes a new os and video card are all you need as long as 1. you have a motherboard with a pcie slot and 2. have a fast enough processor and enough ram
Edit: he beat me to it although you don't need a dx10 card for the aero effect as the vista desktop runs on dx9 but gaming will require dx10 in the future

Thanks a bunch for the replies guys, can you fill me in on what a PCIe slot is exactly? I havn't been keeping up very well on technology, I'm assuming it's a new advanced version of a PCI slot?

you dont need dx10 card for vista. just any card with pixel shader 2.0/wddm dx9 card works with aero too so it is not required for vista.
just get whatever you can.
