Default Widescreen LCD vs. Standard, which to get?

First time posting here. My CRT is going out and am going to upgrade to an LCD. I have been looking at getting a widescreen, 20", but am not sure how it will work with various games and such.

Will the games get stretched to fit? Can you adjust them to fit? How well do other applications work in that?

I have a Geforce 6600, 256mb card with DVI, PCIx16, and am running XP.

What monitor type would be best for gaming? I have been mostly going through the stuff on newegg. Thanks.

Some games don't support widescreen resolutions, so they will either stretch, or have black bars on either side. However, a 20" monitor is big enough that the lost space shouldn't be a big issue.

for games that don't support a certain resolution, so far I've never seen a game that you can't make it that resolution with a tweak in its config file.

I'd go widescreen since I like them over a traditional 4:3 screen and playing movies and games looks better on them.

IMO, anything less than 20" is bad for widescreen, as the monitor looks awfully squashed. My friend has a 21" wide and it looks pretty sweet.

My 19in widescreen rules the world, diduknowthat. It is very large, doesnt look squashed at all and was a lot cheaper than a 20in or larger screen. I would highly reccomend the 19in size for a cheap widescreen.

Go to a store and look at widescreen versus 4:3 and see which one you like better.

widescreen is good if you surf alot because theres little to no scrolling when browsing webpages.
