I own one and I can say it's very good
Yes, I think the iPod wins in functionality (thanks to the click scrollwheel) but the Zen Vision : M isn't bad. I don't like iTunes, plus the gorgeous 256,000+ colors screen and multiple video format compatibility are the reasons why I chose it over the iPod. Half the time, I don't need to convert a video at all to play it. It is a thicker than the iPod, but it's not something I mind.

Well I've had a side-by-side comparison of a Zen Vision M and an iPod video and I'd say for videos, the Vision wins on clarity, brightness, contrast, and color representation. The Zen also supports much more video formats than the iPod video. Also, the Vision has a built in radio (not a huge feature but still a plus). If you want a video player then I'd invest in something made by Archos, they are great with PVPs. I am going to get the Archos AV700 soon (7" screen hehe).
Here is a good comparison image, at first I thought it was doctored bu after seeing them both myself, this is pretty accurate.

yes, yes the Vision: M is amazingly better than the iPod. I just got one for Christmas and I can tell you that it plays almost every video I had on my computer, except for .mov I'd highly recommend it.

Yeah, good choice. I also just got one for Christmas, I love it. Set up is a breeze, and the video quality is amazing. I love the FM radio and how you can record from there. Also, it's pretty sweet how you can set your own background. You can use any picture on your Zen. I definitely highly recommend it.
