Need help with ADSL router and wirelesss network
OK, here's my problem. I am having problems getting my network to work with my newly established ADSL router service. I am in the military, just having moved to Japan. Previously, my network worked fine with the previous cable modem back in the States. My cable modem went to the Linksys router (WRT54G), which was hard-wired to the desktop, and my Linksys router connected fine with the two laptops. All three computers could see each other's shared drives OK, and they all had no problems getting out to the internet.
When I got to Japan, I re-established the network as previously described. Prior to connecting the ADSL router, the computers could see each other's shared drives OK. After I connected the ADSL router per the manufacturer's instructions (i.e., directly into the back of the desktop computer and set up the connection), then the problems started. At first, only my desktop computer could get to the internet. My computers started having problems seeing each other's shared folders. When I ran ipconfig, one of the computers would pull up an IP address than 192.168.1.X. The only way I could get my laptops to connect to the internet was to connect the ADSL router to port #1 (instead of the internet connection) in the back of the Linksys router, which works great except I can't get out to the internet on the desktop.
The only way I can get the computers to see each other's shared drives has been to assign them static IP addresses in the 192.168.1.x range rather than letting the IP addresses be automatically assigned.
I've played with the settings on the Linksys router (e.g., auto DHCP vs. PPPoE, etc.) and various cable connection combinations on the back of the Linksys router and the desktop, but no other combination has worked to get me internet access for the three computers and to let me see all the shared drives. Help!!! Does any of this make any sense? Anyone got any ideas?
Thanks for the help!!!
