Unhappy USB device malfunction/not recogised

Can anyone help me?? got a mextor 3200 USB hard drive today, thinking I would just plug it into my USB 2.0 port and it would work but I keep getting error message saying malfunction. Could it be faulty or have I failed to do something to make it work?

Does a box come up saying you need the drivers for the hardware, with options to install from a specific location or to search for the drivers automaticaly?

Default Hard Drive Malfunction

No, the only instruction that come with it say plug into mains, plug into usb and thats it. No discs, and from the mextor web site it seems no drivers either.
