How Come You Can Only Write to a Compact Flash Card So Many Times

I have a question about CF card and why you can only write to them so many times. Is this so the companys who make them can make more money or is it a design flaw, if it is a design flaw how come they havn't improved it??????

I think it just dies after being wrote on so many times, but im not 100% why.
