wipe hard drive clean?

ok..i have this old gateway (windows 98) and i wanna wipe the hard drive completly clean and have a fresh clean slate to start on. problem is...the computer wont start...i mean it does and it will go to the desk top but then after about 30 seconds of jsut sitting their and moving the mosue around it freezes up. so my qeustion is, is it possibl to wipe your hard drive clean without you computer on???

wipe it from another computer.

How old is your gateway? Since it's on 98, I assume it's not up to par. The only question is are you going to put 98 on it again? Or something like XP? You don't really need to do it from the desktop, as long as it boots up, you can do it from there.
