Default External Hard Drive

Hi there

I'm not very technically computer minded so please bear with me I bought a 250gb external hard drive today to run from my laptop computer and it isn't recognising it. I bought an external box to go with it, put it all together and plugged it in and nothing.... It came with a tiny little CD that my DVD rom drive didn't recognise so my husband loaded it all onto his desktop PC, formatted the hard drive and gave it back to me.

I then plugged it in once again after a lot of mucking around got it to appear in My Computer, I went to copy some files across and it dissapeared, leaving behind an error message saying that the files have been lost.

I now can't get the drive to appear in My Computer again, the file that I was copying is no longer on my C Drive and not sure if it is on the new drive...

Can anyone please tell me what I may have done wrong?? It is an ASUS but don't know what model it is I have had it for about 1.5 years...
