Exclamation wireless workgroup

hey,

me and a friend set up a wireless workgroup at my house yesterday so my laptop can access my files and printer on the desktop and it works fine everythings great.

but today i went to a differant friends house to help him set a wireless workgroup for the same thing at his house, but for some reason when we try to access the desktop over the network it says not allowed etc... yes i know this normally means conflicting ip addresses or whatever or firewall... but this is with the firewall off even though ive set the ip addresses in the firewall (ZA)

anyway the thing that i do not understand at all is that the printer that is attached to his computer works over the network!!!!!!!??!!!

i dont know how this can be possible!!

does anyone know why it should not be letting us access the network other than printer.

and also the network works if u access the files on the laptop from the desktop so this is weird.

please help

Is he using the Windows Zero Config for his wireless network?

When I was using the Belkin one, I had the same problem. But a swift change to Windows Zero Config sorted all that.

It is the standard wireless networking utility by Microsoft. If he is not using it then somewhere in the utility he is using it should give you the option to change to the Windows one.

i just set it up by putting both work groups to HOME putting the ip addresses in to the firewalls and sharing the files.

its weird because it lets him use the printer but not access the files!

Do all the computers show up in the workgroup computers screen?

The computer that he wants to access files from has to be turned on.

yeh when he clicks on show workgroup computers it shows he other computer but if he clicks on it it comes up with the error message.

yes the files he wants are shared, and if he searches for a printer that works fine.

any ideas?

I had a problem with my home network that was similar. I could see all computers on my network and transfer files except my main computer couldn't be accessed by any other on the network. It would always ask for a password witch didn't exsist. I fought it for months, Reading forums and rechecking everything i could think of. I finally found that one of my kids setup another user for the computer and i couldn't delete it. Long story..short, I reformatted my computer and problem was solved.
