Default Please explain what KB means in pics

Hello
I have experimented with this all day and don't know if it even matters. I can understand that if a pic is altered yet remains the same size it can change it's KB but if I take the same pic and just save it a few times under a different name ie: horse1 horse 2 etc without changing a thing the KB are sometimes very different though the size remains the same 500px X 400px.
The reason I care is because I wonder if this slows down the loading when someone goes to my site if they are not on broadband and if it means that I use up my space on my site.
Thanks
rob

Of course! KB is a measure of space. The higher it is, the more space it takes up, the longer it'll take to load.

However, I don't understand what you mean about how it gets bigger when you save it over and over... I can do that now and it's all the same size. Are you sure the format's not being changed? I could understand maybe a little change due to file compression. Compressing a compressed image can make it larger at times.

I realized that some pics are 2 tp 5 times more KB yet same px like 500X400 so I just tried to save the same pic under different names without changing anything and got the same effect for no apparent reason.
Thanks

So you've answered your own question.

Pic sizing and KB

Now you know why its bigger. But I dont see why you had to keep on about it, as someone else stated, a couple of hundered KB isnt a whole lot unless your harddrive is only 1MB . Even most REALLY cheap hosts give you at least 50MB of space on a server. Considering a 200KB picture, thats still 250 pictures.

Oh and another person asked is it kilobyte to kilobit, its kilobyte. Kilobit is Kb.

Not sure what you mean kobaj by answering my own question. Some of my pages have many pics on them and I still don't know why the same pic would have up to 6X the MB for no apparent reason.
If I spend countless hours for years on my site it would good to know why this is happening.

Example: If I take a 500X400 pic and do nothing but rename it (as an experiment) and i end up with pics same px but from approx 40 to 250 MB.

Didnt you say that by saving it multiple times the size of it grew?

Any who, I understand now why you want your pics smaller, but...Lets assume your talking a typical 56k connection. Instead of your picture downloading in 1 second, it takes 4, no one is going to hate your site for 3 extra seconds. Especially if all the other pictures around it load first, the person is going to take the extra time to wait for the oversized picture.

Some advice, get photoshop or gimp or some other program that allows you to change the quality you save your photos, that would allow you to bring it down. Or when you click save, click the button that sais 'layer load' or 'progressive load' Whereas when you place the image on your site and a 56k person views the image. the first thing they see is crap, and then slowly the images quality gets better (as the 56k person dowloads more).

Final suggestion, dont put the image on your site if its slowing it down that much.

1 byte is 8bits meaning 8 1's and 0's, so 8kbits = 1kbyte

It's not so much a site prob. as that it just doesn't make sense to me. I just took 1 pic sized it from 1600X1200 to 500X375 it became 144 KB not a problem
then simply renamed the 144KB in ACDC. The renamed one did turn out the same once then repeated the same thing and got one 26.3 KB then 77 KB all without changing anything, just renaming.
Thanks
