Why are there so many 1st National banks?

Shouldn't there only be 1? It makes no since! 1st is 1st, there shouldn't be a 2nd 1st national bank! WTF?

In the USA there are banks, thousands of them, the thing is there are tons of banks named "1st National Bank" IT MAKES NO SENCE!)

notice that its usually called the First National bank of......(insert place name here)

thats because it will be the first nationally chartered bank of that area
