I have recently begun transferring old VHS recordings to DVD-R with Windows Media Center (My VCR is hooked up to the TV Tuner via coaxial cable, so I am effectively tricking the computer into thinking it is "Recording Live TV").
I use this in conjunction with Nero Burning Rom to 'Make your own DVD video"; creating manually set chapter stops, rather clunky menus, etc.
The files that I "record" onto my hard drive are saved in a .dvr-ms format, exclusive to Windows (I assume).

I am curious to know if anyone else out there has an alternative program or add-on that works better than the default Windows Media Center - especially in relation to the quality of the video/audio encoding. I have set it at "High Quality" in the configuration options, but I don't really have the expertise to judge if this is the best way to do things. Obviously, the quality isn't going to be any better than VHS anyway, but I'd prefer not to find out there was a better way to do it afterward.....

Sorry for the lack of detail, I'm new at this.....Any suggestions from more those more experienced with VHS to DVDR conversion would be great.

Does anyone out there use their Windows Media Center to backup VHS recordings to DVD-R?

Are there any programs available that specifically work for this, other Media Center's general "Recording Live TV" feature?

Do you use any additional programs to clean up the VHS picture/audio quality (that are compatible with Windows .dvr-ms format)?

Again, I know the quality wouldn't get much better, especially moving from analog to digital, but ANY guidance on ANY of this would be great......
