Default Laptop stereo sound problem

Hi,

I recently installed a new screen on this laptop that my dad didnt get round to fixing. The screen is perfect now, but i've discovered another problem now. when i was home over the holidays i used an old set of speakers to play music through the laptop, but the sound was only coming coming out of one speaker. i assumed the speakers were at fault and left it at that. i moved back up to uni today and plugged my speakers up here, into the laptop, only to find the same problem. can anyone suggest what i do to resolve this problem?

maybe a PCMCIA sound card? but they are so expensive

anyway, thanks in advance....
